DriftA calm visualizer

Binaural beats only work with headphones. Pop them in before you begin.

How are you feeling right now?

Pick the closest one. There’s no wrong answer. Drift will meet you there with sound, color and a slow breath, and take its time with you.

About Drift

Drift is a quiet few minutes for your senses. You tell it how you feel, and it chooses a soft pair of tones, a slow breathing pace and deep, dreamy pictures to match. Then, over the first few minutes, everything slows down a little.

You don’t have to do anything. Watch the light, let your breath follow it if you like, and let your thoughts drift past. When the time is up, the sound fades away on its own.

This is Pillar III: Read your state first one of the Five Pillars

In you. Drift begins by asking how you feel. That small pause is the pillar: noticing whether your battery is calm, revved up or shut down before you judge the moment you’re in.

Between you and others. Your state shapes how other people’s words land. The same sentence can sound like an attack when you’re on edge and like a fair point when you’re settled. So if a hard talk is coming, a few minutes here first helps you hear the other person more kindly and speak more softly yourself. And if a conversation is heating up, it’s okay to say “let me take ten minutes,” settle, and come back.

An honest note about binaural beats

What they are. When each ear hears a slightly different steady tone, say 200 Hz on the left and 208 Hz on the right, your brain hears a soft, slow “wah-wah” at the difference: 8 beats a second. That beat isn’t in the air. It’s made between your ears, which is why it only works with headphones.

What to expect. Nothing special is promised. Drift is simply slow pictures, soft sound and a light to breathe along with, like a quiet playlist with something to watch. Enjoy it if it suits you, and stop whenever you like. It isn’t a treatment of any kind.

Using it kindly.

  • Don’t use it while driving, cycling or operating machinery, or anywhere you need to stay alert.
  • Keep the volume low. The tones should sit quietly in the background.
  • Stop anytime if you feel dizzy, uneasy or uncomfortable in any way.
  • The pictures move slowly and never flash, and brightness is kept soft. If your device asks for reduced motion, or you turn on Keep the page still, Drift keeps the picture nearly still. You can also just close your eyes and listen.

Private by design. The sound and pictures are made right here in your browser. Drift remembers your last choices on this device only, so it’s ready next time.

Your own music. If you choose “Or visualize your own music,” Drift listens through your microphone, or to a tab you choose to share on a computer, only to move the pictures. The sound is measured live on your device and is never recorded, saved or sent. It stops when you press Stop listening or leave the page. Drift can’t connect to a Spotify account, because Spotify doesn’t let websites read the sound it plays; these two ways work with Spotify and any other music app.

What each session uses

The beat starts near where you are and glides to its target over the first few minutes. A stronger feeling means a slightly longer glide and a slower out-breath. Only the “Scattered” session lifts to a slightly livelier beat; the rest slow down.
