The Night Garden: a calm breathing game

The Night Garden

Welcome to the Night Garden

A quiet place to breathe, play and let your mind settle. There are no timers and no way to lose. Everything here stays on your device.

What would you like to do?

The garden is silent unless you turn sound on, and you can turn it off again anytime with the Sound button at the bottom. If you like sound, headphones are lovely here. You can switch between the three activities anytime with the buttons at the bottom. Tap How to play whenever you need a reminder.

Why a garden?

The Night Garden is a gentle place to land at the end of a day: a few quiet things to do, with nothing to win and nothing to lose. It isn’t a treatment, and it doesn’t replace talking to someone.

  • Slow breathing. Your first visit is box breathing (in, hold, out, rest, four counts each). After that the garden brings a different calm pattern on most visits: a triangle, a slow wave, or the long breath out used across the rest of this site (in for 4, out for 6). The help card names the pattern each time. Each one breathes out for at least as long as it breathes in, at a few unhurried breaths a minute. The light in the garden keeps the count for you, so all you have to do is follow it.
  • Gentle play. Fireflies to guide and lilies to fit together, at your own pace. There’s no score to chase here and nothing to lose.
  • Busy hands. Fitting shapes together gives your attention one small, absorbing thing to hold, if your thoughts feel busy.
  • Soft, natural movement. Slowly moving light, water and leaves, to watch for as long as you like.

The garden grows as you visit: flowers you bloom stay, the moon follows the real one, the seasons change with the calendar, and every night has its own sky. The pictures, ponds and breathing patterns you’ve seen are remembered, so they don’t come round again too soon. Missing a day costs nothing. Everything is kept only in this browser, on this device.
