Communication style quiz: find your Wave Code

This free communication style quiz, called Wavelength, shows how you naturally talk and listen. It takes about ten minutes, mostly tapping. You answer short questions about everyday moments and get a four-letter Wave Code: your pace, whether you see the big picture or the details first, how you send words and how you receive them. Your code matches one of 16 archetypes, like The Firefly, The Owl or The Quilt. It is a mirror for self-discovery, not a test you can pass or fail.

Ready? It’s free, there are no wrong answers, and nothing you choose is sent anywhere.

What the quiz looks at: the four Wave Code letters

Each letter of your Wave Code comes from one pair. Most people lean one way in each pair, and many sit close to the middle on at least one.

Pace

QQuick Spark · SSlow Simmer

Do you think out loud and answer fast, or do you like a little time to think before you speak? Quick Sparks bring energy. Slow Simmers bring depth.

Big picture or details

FForest · TTrees

Do you start with the big idea and fill in later, or do you need the steps and specifics first? Forests see where it’s all going. Trees make sure it works.

How you send

DDirect · NNuanced

Do you say it plainly, or do you soften it, add context and read the room first? Direct senders are clear. Nuanced senders are careful.

How you receive

EExplicit · AAttuned

Do you take words at face value and prefer things spelled out, or do you pick up on tone, pauses and what’s left unsaid? Explicit listeners hear the words. Attuned listeners hear the music.

Put the four letters together and you get your Wave Code. There are 16 possible codes, and each one has its own archetype with a friendly name. QFNA is The Firefly: bright, warm, full of ideas and quick to sense how others feel. SFDE is The Owl: thinks long and deep, speaks plainly and takes words at face value. STNA is The Quilt: patient, detail-minded and gentle, stitching people together by noticing everything.

Why your communication style matters in relationships

Many arguments between kind people are not really disagreements. They are style mismatches. A Quick Spark asks a question and hears silence. A Slow Simmer feels rushed and put on the spot. A Direct sender says “this isn’t working” and means the plan. An Attuned listener hears it as being about them.

When you can name your styles, you can stop taking these moments personally. “I’m a Slow Simmer, so give me until after dinner” is much easier to hear than a long silence. Good communication in relationships often starts with knowing how each person is wired.

How to use your result with someone else

  1. Each take the quiz on your own. Answer for how you really are on an ordinary day, not how you wish you were.
  2. Share your Wave Codes. Look at each letter. Where are you the same? Where are you different?
  3. Pick one difference to work with. For example, if one of you is Direct and the other is Attuned, agree that the Direct partner adds one kind word up front, and the Attuned partner asks “do you mean the plan, or me?”
  4. Try it for a week, then talk. Small changes, kept up, make the biggest difference.

It works for more than couples: friends, roommates, family and coworkers can compare codes too. If you want to practice a tricky sentence, the Chat analyzer shows how it may land on someone with a different style.

What this quiz is, and what it isn’t

Questions people often ask

Is this a personality quiz?

It’s a personality quiz focused on one thing: how you communicate. It looks at your pace, how much detail you like, and how you send and receive words, rather than your whole personality.

What are the four communication styles?

Wavelength uses four pairs instead of four boxes: Quick Spark or Slow Simmer, Forest or Trees, Direct or Nuanced, and Explicit or Attuned. Together they make 16 Wave Codes, so your result is more specific than a single label.

Can my Wave Code change?

Yes. Most people have a natural lean, but stress, tiredness and new habits can shift a letter or two. That’s normal.

Is one communication style best?

No. Each style has strengths. Trouble usually comes from two styles misreading each other, not from either style being wrong.

Is the communication style quiz free and private?

Yes. The Wavelength quiz is free. Nothing you type or choose is sent anywhere, and your answers stay on your device only if you choose to save them.

Do I have to pick a neurotype?

No. There is an optional step where you can choose your wiring, like ADHD, autistic or highly sensitive, if you like. It only changes which options you see first. It is self-identified, not a diagnosis.
